Who knew it would be such a job

After a short fast ride on Friday (6/1) our group settled into our home stay houses and prepared for a busy weekend!

Saturday we woke up bright and early and headed to the job site! The house I the home of a 15 year old boy named Justin and his family. Justin suffers from a degenerative disease that attacks his nervous system and has left him in a wheelchair for the past year. His house is mostly wheelchair accessible but a new bedroom and bathroom would greatly improve his home. The grouped worked hard to move lumber, organize the site, prepare the foundation and build from the ground up. I helped Tony work on special studs for the windows and doors. I got pretty frustrated with my lack of hammer skills but improved with some handy tips and lots of practice. When the long wall went up I helped support it, that felt great. During the afternoon a lot of technical things were happening and I stood around some, bummer.

It was amazing how even NOT biking makes me tired. There was no adrenaline to push me though the day. We still ate every hour or so. I like this diet!

After a shower and a power nap the group headed to Lee's house for a pizza dinner. We sat watching the sunset and the horses grazing.

Sunday (6/3) morning the group split up and headed to two different churches in the area. Kelsey and I went to the Methodist church. We talked ti many people of the congregation about The Fuller Center and about biking. Everyone was so interested!

Sunday afternoon we made banana bread, took naps, cleaned out the trailer and did more laundry. That evening we had another bonfire. It was at the dome house, so cool! We celebrated Tom's 70th birthday. He is riding both the East and West Coast and is a huge inspiration to me!

Monday (6/4) I volunteered to be a sweeper as we rode to Avondale, PA. There was city riding in Philadelphia and then country riding once we got to PA. We rode across the Ben Franklin Bridge and saw the Liberty Bell from afar! The church had a cookout for us and I spent a great deal of time talking to a woman who biked around France in her younger days.

Tuesday (6/5) we rode into Maryland! Even though there was poison ivy all over the state sign we carefully got a picture to document. We arrived I Baltimore by 2pm and went to the bike shop to get our bikes looked at. Kelsey got new tires compliments of my visa card, I am a great friend in a pinch! The bike guy laughed at my crooked seat and lopsided handlebars. Mexican dinner was a welcomed site after two weeks of pasta and burgers.

We have a smaller group this week, but things are still going great! I love riding and experiencing the true hospitality of the American East!

We got free spokes from the bike shop and so we made bracelets!
