Today we were supposed to come to the lab around ten am. The lab we are researching in is CNDE or Center for Non-Destructive Evaluation. The lab is located in the MDS Building or Machine Design Science Building. The lab is on part of the second and third floor of the building. So we caught the bus at 9:45am and arrived at the lab promptly at ten am as we were instructed. We walk through the lab and there are two or three people there. Nobody that we have me is there so with a sense of confusion we sat in the loby area and enjoyed the internet on our phones. Once 10:30 rolled around we decided to get our laptops out and find some articles relevant to our research topics and start reading. We did not get very far though because the internet connection was very poor on our computers. The technology guy at the Center came and asked for our emails. He said that he will be submitting our forms for us to receive internet passwords today. So hopefully tomorrow we will have our own passwords to access the internet more efficeintly efficiently.
He said that we can work in some of the rooms instead of sitting on the couches. Caroline and I made space in one of the rooms. We sat in front of computers on our laptops to begin reading. The technology guy came in and put a password in our computers so that we had internet to actually find articles. We both started reading articles and taking notes. We discussed our project with each other so that we can stay on the same page and figure out what we are doing. After about a half hour Bob wandered into our room followed by Mike and Evan. We were all not being that productive since we need more guidance from our professors on what we are researching.
We looked for cricket matches and glanced at some travel blogs to see where we wanted to travel. We decided to buckle down for a bit longer and to take a break for lunch at noon. Caroline and I continued reading articles and promptly at 12:00 Caroline said 'Oh time for lunch!'. We packed up and headed to find the others. After discussion of our plans I decided to stay at the lab with Tim while the other four went to lunch. I was not very hungry yet and had found an interesting article to read.
After about another two hours in the lab I was hungry so I found Tim and we headed for lunch. We had heard of an international office and thought they may have campus maps so we went to find out and it was a success. The women working in the office was very helpful! It was great to talk to an Indian women and for her to be helpful. We learned that our program is kind of under the table and not actually registered with the university. Professor Krishinan, who we are researching under, just kind of does his own thing apparently. The women answered a handful of questions and gave us maps and student guide books with information. We asked if where we could get a cycle and she said she had two we can use for the summer! We were beyond excited about this! She gave us the keys and we had bikes!
The bikes were low on air so we walked them to the a nearby hostel, hostels are like dorms and students live in them, that we were told has air. So we set our backpacks down so we could put air in the tires. That was a mistake. We were warned about the monkeys but I didn't think that the first person I would be stolen from was going to be a monkey! I had my water bottle in the water bottle side pocket of my backpack and the monkey came and took it out. There was nothing I could do but watch the monkey walk away with it. He kind of stared at me then continued by opening the bottle and drinking it. Once it was half way empty he put it above his head and chugged it! He was fortunate because I had just filled my bottle at the lab. Then there was a handful of monkeys around us. Every way we looked there was a monkey. We soon realized the air pump didn't work and locked the bikes there and escaped from the monkeys away from the hostel.
It was a bit of an adrenaline rush from the monkey encounter and I no longer think that the monkeys all over campus are cute. We headed to tiffany's for lunch. Tiffany's is similar to a cafeteria where students go to eat. They didn't have what I was planning on getting so I got Plain Dosa which was just too spicy for me at the time but I ate a majority of it because I was hungry. After lunch we were planning on meeting friends at 4pm to get a sim card for Tim phone. We chatted with our friends and got juice for about an hour before heading home to the hotel. It was an eventful day in my Indian clothing and I was sweaty! Oh I forgot to mention that Caroline and I wore typical Indian clothes today. More on that soon!
We ate dinner at the hotel and played cards with Tim and Bob. It was relaxing evening which was good after a hot long day. Tomorrow we plan on arriving at the lab a little later than ten am. We will see where the adventures of tomorrow lead us.
